Thanks as always Bassman for reading and commenting!

I don't think Lowe was going to be what we would consider a #2 SP. I think last year was above what he was going to produce in 2009 and the Mets infield defense, particularly if Reyes doesn't bounce back, was going to be a problem for him.

If Delgado produces, the Mets offense is just as good as the Phillies.

I'm not worried about middle relief. Hopefully there will be fewer games where the bullpen has to take over before the sixth inning and Manuel does not burn out the pen. And from a psychological stand point, I'm willing to lose a few games in the sixth inning compared to the ninth inning.

My main concern is injury. The Mets were extremely fortunate last year in that the biggest injury was Moises Alou (or Billy Wagner). May that we get full and healthy seasons again from Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Delgado, Santana and Pelfrey. And K-Rod and Putz too. I'll take my chances with that group.

Very excited for the start of the new season and some great moments. This interview touches on the issues that will be a concern the majority of the season:

Lack of production from the corner outfield positions.
Middle bullpen relief: Where is Turk Wendell???
Delgado: Please stay healthy.

SP: I was hoping for Derek Lowe for a strong number 2 in the rotation, but hopefully Pelfrey steps it up. Maine is coming off some tough surgery so we will see where that goes. Can Perez shut up the critics and stay strong through the season?

Castillo: Does he have it in him or is he past his prime? Will he get on base in the lead off spot and free up Reyes' bat?

Relying on Wright, Beltran, and Reyes to have strong years.

Bottom line: We are improved, but our line up has too many weaknesses in it that will outscore opponents. Mike Francessa is right when he talks about the superiority of the Phillies offense.

Hopefully, we hold in there and perhaps get pushed over the top via trade. Lets see how we do and go from there. The Wilpons can't afford to open up their wallet any more than they have already and that is understandable given the Madoff situation and the anticipated weakness in attendance and advertising. Maybe they can get a better deal via trade as the season moves along.
